The greatest tragedy in the world today is not that we are often in the pit of one problem or the other but being so blind not to see that God's hand is outstretching to lift us up out of the pit.
We are familiar with the expressions and experiences like: "I cannot go on anymore", "my patience has reached its elastic limit", "I am burnt out", "I am better dead than alive", "I have hit the rock", "I have reached the end of my strength". These are moments in life when we are broke and broken. In the readings of today we see such moments that made Elijah cry, made Paul lament and made Peter panic.
In today's gospel we heard how the disciples were having those same experiences. The question that comes to mind is why does not Jesus stop the storm they were experiencing first? The boat with His disciples is battered by winds and threatened by waves. There is no Coast Guard to come to their rescue, no radio to call for help, no flares to signal their distress. These men are not wearing life jackets. Many of the men in the boat are fishermen, who have seen the bodies of men drowned in just such storms. If the boat goes down, they will die.

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Edith Stein: Philosopher, Carmelite, and Martyr
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was born Edith Stein in 1891 into a devout Jewish family in Breslau, Germany, now Wrocław, Poland. Brilliant and deeply thoughtful, she studied philosophy and became known for her work on empathy and the dignity of the human person.
As a young woman, Edith stopped practicing her Jewish faith and considered herself an atheist. Yet she continued searching for truth. Her encounters with faithful Christians, especially those who faced suffering with hope, moved her deeply.
A turning point came when she read the autobiography of St. Teresa of Ávila. After reading through the night, Edith recognized that she had found the truth she had been seeking. She was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1922.
Edith became a teacher, lecturer, and writer. She believed that faith and reason belong together and that every person has a unique dignity and vocation. Although she desired to enter religious life, she waited patiently until 1933, when she entered the Carmelite convent in Cologne and took the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
Her religious name reflected her growing understanding that following Christ means accepting the Cross with faith and love. She did not seek suffering, but she believed that suffering united with Christ could become an offering of love for others.
Because of her Jewish ancestry, Edith became a target of Nazi persecution. She and her sister Rosa were moved to a convent in the Netherlands, but in 1942 they were arrested in retaliation for the Dutch bishops' protest against the deportation of Jews.
Edith remained calm and helped comfort frightened prisoners, especially mothers and children. Before leaving, she reportedly said to her sister: "Come, Rosa. We are going for our people."
Edith and Rosa were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and killed in a gas chamber on or about August 9, 1942.
Pope St. John Paul II canonized her in 1998 and later named her a co-patroness of Europe.
Why She Matters Today
St. Teresa Benedicta teaches us to seek truth courageously, even when it requires sacrifice. Her life shows that faith and intelligence are not opposed but can work together in the search for God.
She also reminds us of the sacred dignity of every human person. Her witness challenges us to reject antisemitism, hatred, prejudice, and every form of persecution.
Most of all, she teaches us how to carry the Cross—not with despair, but with courage, love, and trust in Christ.
Prayer
God of truth and mercy, You led St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross from searching and doubt to faith and complete surrender to Christ. Through her intercession, help us seek truth with courage, recognize the dignity of every person, and stand with those who suffer persecution. Teach us to carry our crosses with faith, hope, and love. Through Christ our Lord.

Schott Communities 5K Run, Walk and Roll

Save the date! Join us for the Schott "Run, Walk and Roll," taking place in the beautiful community of Southwest Ranches. Entrants can choose to participate in the timed 5K Run, 1K Walk, or join virtually from anywhere. Various awards are handed out.

Enthronement is a profound act of faith in which we place an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a place of honor in our home, acknowledging Him as King, Guide, Friend, and Protector of the family.
When we open the doors of our home, Jesus promises us peace within our families, abundant blessings, and a safe refuge. If you would like your family to receive guidance on the preparation and blessing of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, please register as follows:
