We remember today Saints Peter and Paul, the principal pillars of the Church, who guided the early Christians. Both died as martyrs for the faith in Rome, in the early 60s, just thirty years after the death of Jesus. Saints Peter and Paul are probably the most known of all the saints in the Catholic Church. What makes them so famous is that both of them were chosen by Jesus in a very special way for the building of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Saint Peter was the son of Jona and brother of Andrew. He was a professional fisherman from Bethsaida, a fishing town on the Lake of Galilee. He might have been a follower of John the Baptist. It was his brother Andrew who introduced him to Jesus, and Jesus who changed his name from Simon to Cephas or Peter. Jesus made him the leader of his apostles. At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus promised to make him the head of his Church, and the risen Jesus confirmed Peter’s precedence. It was the Holy Spirit who inspired Peter’s Proclamation of the Good News to all in Jerusalem on the day of the Pentecost bringing the Church into living action. Peter made missionary journeys to Lydda, Joppa and Caesarea and convened the first Council in Jerusalem.

The mission of the Respect Life Ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami is to defend the sanctity and dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death.

We do this in four main ways:

  1. Public Information and Education: to deepen understanding of the sanctity of human life, the value of each person from conception, and the Church's call to bear witness to life.
  2. Pastoral Care: accompanying women in crisis pregnancies, people who have experienced abortion, the sick, their families, victims of violence, people deprived of their liberty, and all those who suffer.
  3. Public Policies: promoting laws that protect the unborn and the vulnerable, and offering alternatives to abortion and assisted suicide.
  4. Prayer and Worship: as a spiritual pillar, fostering sacramental and community life to establish a culture of life and love.

History of Our Ministry at Saint Katharine Drexel

The Pro-Life Ministry at our parish was born in 2013, when we were still celebrating Mass at the Glades Circle offices. It all began thanks to a volunteer who saw the need and began collecting baby items to take weekly to the Respect Life Center in Ft. Lauderdale.

In 2015, Beatriz Capdevielle, moved by a deep calling to service, joined this mission with the vision of formalizing a ministry. Thus, together with the initial volunteer, they gave life to the Pro-Life Ministry of Saint Katharine Drexel, which Beatriz led with love and dedication for 10 years, until January 2025. That year, Beatriz moved to another city and left the ministry in the hands of Anahí Welschen, a volunteer from the beginning.

Our History

Throughout these years, many committed volunteers have been instruments of hope for vulnerable lives. Victoria Gamba, who co-directed the ministry from 2018 to 2023, led 10 volunteers per week and converted her garage into a collection center, stands out.

In 2020, with the arrival of the pandemic, we adapted our work to new realities: virtual meetings, rosaries via Zoom, and a restructuring within the Archdiocese that consolidated the five centers into three. One of them is directed by Belkys Rodríguez, a parishioner and volunteer from the beginning.

Main Activities

Our work is expressed in multiple initiatives, including:

  • Baby Bottle Collection, a symbol of our parish presence.
  • Prayer in front of abortion clinics, led by Luciana Barnabei.
  • Participation in the Pro-Life Marches in Tallahassee and Washington.
  • Collaboration with Youth Ministries and Religious Education to collect baby items.
  • Rosaries for the most vulnerable, as a tool for formation and awareness.
  • Theology of the Body Seminar for young people.

Our Action Today

We currently meet on the first Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the parish's mobile homes. There we share formation, experiences, prayer, and projects to continue bringing the culture of life to our young people and the entire community.

  • We have two active volunteers weekly at the centers, and three more in formation.
  • Every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., we hold our Holy Hour, organized by Fabiana Casteigts, who coordinates the weekly meetings.
  • We maintain a WhatsApp group to stay connected, share news, prayer requests, needs, and calls to action.

Do you feel the call?

If you feel the calling in your heart to serve in this ministry of love and hope, we invite you to contact us or attend our meetings.
There is no more beautiful work than defending life and serving those most in need.

Liturgical Catechesis: The Parts of the Mass | Issue 18 / 40

In the final part of the Liturgy of the Word, the people exercise their baptismal priesthood by offering the prayers of the general intercessions.

Although the presiding priest introduces and concludes these prayers, they are read or sung by a deacon, cantor, or lector.

The intercessions follow a particular order: the needs of the Church, civil authorities and the salvation of the world, those in difficult circumstances, and the local community. At special celebrations, specific intercessions appropriate to the occasion may be added.

Although Justin, writing around the year 150, mentions these prayers as part of the Eucharistic celebration, they disappeared from the liturgy for about fourteen hundred years until they were reintroduced by the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

What is the Purpose of the Procession?

This annual motorcade procession is a significant and now traditional event with three main goals:

  1. To promote Marian devotion under the title of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba and co-patroness of the Archdiocese of Miami.
  2. To encourage participation in events surrounding the Feast of Our Lady of Charity on September 8.
  3. To inspire visits and pilgrimages to the National Shrine in Miami, especially during this Jubilee Year.

How is the Procession Developed?

The procession takes the form of a reverent caravan or motorcade, led by a pickup truck carrying the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Charity, beautifully adorned with flowers. The caravan is escorted by local police and accompanied by a small group of members from the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Charity, who follow behind the statue in prayer and devotion. When the motorcade arrives at the scheduled stop, it parks in the designated location where the prayer encounter will take place. The image does not come down from the pickup truck nor enter any of the parish buildings.

On August 23rd St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Parish is planned as the sixth stop on the route, with an estimated arrival time at 2:30pm and a departure time at 3:00pm.
