Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Saint Alphonsus Liguori was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists, in November 1732.

In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant ’Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his Moral Theology in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional works and letters. Among his best-known works are The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions.

He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, he is the patron saint of confessors.

He was born in Marianella, near Naples, then part of the Kingdom of Naples, the eldest of seven children. His family was of noble lineage. Liguori learned to ride and fence but was never a good shot because of poor eyesight. Myopia and chronic asthma prohibited him from having a military career so his father had him educated in the legal profession. He was taught by tutors before entering the University of Naples, where he graduated with doctorates in civil and canon law at 16. He remarked later that he was so small at the time that he was almost buried in his doctor’s gown and that all the spectators laughed. When he was 18, like many other nobles, he joined the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mercy, with whom he assisted in the care of the sick at the hospital for “incurables”

He became a successful lawyer. He was thinking of leaving the profession and wrote to someone, “My friend, our profession is too full of difficulties and dangers; we lead an unhappy life and run risk of dying an unhappy death”. At 27, after having lost an important case, the first he had lost in eight years of practicing law, he made a firm resolution to leave the profession of law. Moreover, he heard an interior voice saying: “Leave the world and give yourself to me.”

In 1723, he decided to offer himself as a novice to the Oratory of St. Philip Neri with the intention of becoming a priest. His father opposed the plan, but after two months (and with his Oratorian confessor’s permission), he and his father compromised: he would study for the priesthood, but not as an Oratorian, and would live at home. He was ordained in December, 1726, at the age of 30. He lived his first years as a priest with the homeless and the marginalized youth of Naples. He became very popular because of his plain and simple preaching. He said: “I have never preached a sermon which the poorest old woman in the congregation could not understand”. He founded the Evening Chapels, which were managed by the young people themselves. The chapels were centers of prayer and piety, preaching, community, social activities, and education. At the time of his death, there were 72, with over 10,000 active participants. His sermons were very effective at converting those who had been alienated from their faith.

His feast day is August 1^st.

San Alfonso de Ligorio

San Alfonso de Ligorio fue un obispo católico italiano, escritor espiritual, compositor, músico, artista, poeta, abogado, filósofo escolástico y teólogo. Fundó la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor, conocida como los Redentoristas, en noviembre de 1732.

En 1762 fue nombrado obispo de Sant’Agata dei Goti. Escritor prolífico, publicó nueve ediciones de su Teología Moral durante su vida, además de otras obras y cartas devocionales. Entre sus obras más conocidas se encuentran Las Glorias de María y El Vía Crucis, este último todavía utilizado en las parroquias durante las devociones de Cuaresma.

Nació en Marianella, cerca de Nápoles, entonces parte del Reino de Nápoles, el mayor de siete hermanos. Su familia era de linaje noble. Liguori aprendió a montar y esgrimir, pero nunca fue un buen tirador debido a su mala vista. La miopía y el asma crónica hicieron descartar la carrera militar, por lo que su padre lo educó en la profesión jurídica. Fue instruido por tutores antes de ingresar en la Universidad de Nápoles, donde se doctoró en derecho civil y canónico a los 16 años. Outreach and Missions Ministries

“Parishes are called to reach out to the hurting, the poor, and the vulnerable in our midst in concrete acts of charity. Just as the gospel tells us our lives will be judged by our response to the “least of these,” so too our parishes should be measured by our help for the hungry, the homeless, the troubled, and the alienated-in our own community and beyond. Outreach-Mission ministry is the Church at work in God’s name, stretching out to meet needs in the community at large”. Outreach Ministries, working for a common goal, is the Church at work in God’s name. Outreach is the part that stays within the small community of the church. Mission is the part that will reach the nations, as it is that part which crosses borders. Outreach-mission matters because it matters to God. His mission should be our mission. Matthew 9:36 says, “He looked at the crowds and had compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd”. Jesus clearly had compassion for the people. Our hearts should break for the things that break God’s heart.

Outreach-Mission ministry in the Bible is a form of worship. It can be done individually or with others, and it includes a variety of efforts to address the needs of people, families, and communities. Outreach-mission can include sharing the gospel; providing to those who are in need; leading by example by obeying Jesus’ command to do to others what we would have done to us; showing love to all regardless of race, class, gender and lifestyle. Outreach-mission helps prepare individuals to serve one another at different levels: of their families, communities, and around the world; and encourages Godly relationships through spiritual, educational, and social events and activities.

Outreach-Mission is in the Bible, in the old and new testaments, as in Psalm 41:1, “Blessed is the one who considers the poor in the day of trouble the Lord delivers him,” is a call to care for the weak and disadvantaged. Romans 12:13 encourages us to share with those in need, and to practice hospitality.

Outreach-Mission has been through several cycles. In the first century it was travel, preaching and teaching throughout the Roman Empire. After the invention of the printing press, it also included writing, publishing, and distributing reading. The modern missionary movement sent thousands of missionaries from North America and Europe to unreached places around the globe for short or long-term. For example, the many Catholic Christian schools, hospitals and orphanages that were established in different parts of the world by Salesian Mission, Franciscan Mission, just to name a few.

As Catholic Christians, we engage in outreach-mission when answering our baptismal call by serving others in their needs. Parishes celebrate and support outreach-mission ministry in as many different ways as they have people. While examples such as youth ministry, St. Vincent de Paul and visiting prisoners are familiar to many, the vast majority of Christian outreach is provided by parishioners in our daily lives. Work, school, home and community commitments provide endless opportunities to meet the needs of others.

Outreach-mission is born out of love, compassion, and the deep-rooted understanding of Christ’s teachings, from the Bible standpoint. The Bible presents outreach as a Christian’s obligation to show the love of Christ to others by helping those in need and furthering the kingdom of God on earth.

1 Peter 4:10-11– “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms…so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” We use our unique talents and abilities to serve others and bring glory to God in our outreach and mission.

Paul said it best. “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” Romans 10:14-15

We should not let our own complacency and the tendency to let someone else do it keep us from individually furthering the kingdom of God. We are all called to serve. Here at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Parish, there are many ways individuals and families can answer their baptismal call to serve others in need. There are many ministries in the parish. Parishioners can get information at the SKD Parish website. SKD has had an on-going outreach-mission ministry for the past 20 years. Volunteers are always welcomed and needed throughout the year.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to You I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying You. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to You, and to do all for Your love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease You.

I take You, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be You, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God The Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in You, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Your infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist You.
