On this seventh Sunday of Easter, we celebrate the Solemnity of Ascension of the Lord. It is an important solemnity that marks the return of Jesus to the Father. Together with the Resurrection, it is a manifestation of the victory of Christ. Today is the day we commemorate Jesus leaving His Apostles in bodily form. We would think that they would be weeping yet today it says they went home rejoicing. They waited in Jerusalem for the coming feast of Pentecost. It seems that in life we will have to go through many such leavings but the call from God is not to merely mourn but to rejoice as well. It means we have entered on a new path, and new light will be shed on our path. Ascension is a solemnity that sustains the hope of Christians that one day we shall be where Christ is.

The mission of the Respect Life Ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami is to defend the sanctity and dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death.

We do this in four main ways:

  1. Public Information and Education: to deepen understanding of the sanctity of human life, the value of each person from conception, and the Church's call to bear witness to life.
  2. Pastoral Care: accompanying women in crisis pregnancies, people who have experienced abortion, the sick, their families, victims of violence, people deprived of their liberty, and all those who suffer.
  3. Public Policies: promoting laws that protect the unborn and the vulnerable, and offering alternatives to abortion and assisted suicide.
  4. Prayer and Worship: as a spiritual pillar, fostering sacramental and community life to establish a culture of life and love.

History of Our Ministry at Saint Katharine Drexel

The Pro-Life Ministry at our parish was born in 2013, when we were still celebrating Mass at the Glades Circle offices. It all began thanks to a volunteer who saw the need and began collecting baby items to take weekly to the Respect Life Center in Ft. Lauderdale.

In 2015, Beatriz Capdevielle, moved by a deep calling to service, joined this mission with the vision of formalizing a ministry. Thus, together with the initial volunteer, they gave life to the Pro-Life Ministry of Saint Katharine Drexel, which Beatriz led with love and dedication for 10 years, until January 2025. That year, Beatriz moved to another city and left the ministry in the hands of Anahí Welschen, a volunteer from the beginning.

Our History

Throughout these years, many committed volunteers have been instruments of hope for vulnerable lives. Victoria Gamba, who co-directed the ministry from 2018 to 2023, led 10 volunteers per week and converted her garage into a collection center, stands out.

In 2020, with the arrival of the pandemic, we adapted our work to new realities: virtual meetings, rosaries via Zoom, and a restructuring within the Archdiocese that consolidated the five centers into three. One of them is directed by Belkys Rodríguez, a parishioner and volunteer from the beginning.

Main Activities

Our work is expressed in multiple initiatives, including:

  • Baby Bottle Collection, a symbol of our parish presence.
  • Prayer in front of abortion clinics, led by Luciana Barnabei.
  • Participation in the Pro-Life Marches in Tallahassee and Washington.
  • Collaboration with Youth Ministries and Religious Education to collect baby items.
  • Rosaries for the most vulnerable, as a tool for formation and awareness.
  • Theology of the Body Seminar for young people.

Our Action Today

We currently meet on the first Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the parish's mobile homes. There we share formation, experiences, prayer, and projects to continue bringing the culture of life to our young people and the entire community.

  • We have two active volunteers weekly at the centers, and three more in formation.
  • Every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., we hold our Holy Hour, organized by Fabiana Casteigts, who coordinates the weekly meetings.
  • We maintain a WhatsApp group to stay connected, share news, prayer requests, needs, and calls to action.

Do you feel the call?

If you feel the calling in your heart to serve in this ministry of love and hope, we invite you to contact us or attend our meetings.
There is no more beautiful work than defending life and serving those most in need.

Liturgical Catechesis: The Parts of the Mass | Issue 14 / 40

The Gospel reading is so vital to our understanding of salvation and to our worship that we stand up and greet it with a burst of song.

The bright and wonderful Hebrew word "alleluia", meaning “praise God," is the cry used to herald this reading on most Sundays of the year.

In keeping with the sobriety of Lent, however, we change to a more subdued acclamation during that season.

Given the joyful nature of the Gospel acclamation, it is never spoken but always sung. If it cannot be sung, it is omitted.

We also want to call your attention to the fact that Georgia-Tennessee area is hosting a Virtual Experience, which does afford couples more flexibility in that they won’t be in a hotel or retreat center. Rather, they will be in the comfort of their own home. Since it is virtual, and in the same time zone as our Florida-Southeast area, couples are welcome to sign up for it, as well.

The mission of Worldwide Marriage Encounter is to proclaim the value of Marriage and Holy Orders in the Church and in the world.

The experience allows the couples to create a dialogue with each other and with God, to create a higher and broader understanding of what it means to be married.
