To be a Christian is to be on a mission and this mission consists of the proclamation of the reign of the Kingdom of God and of the everlasting presence of the peace which God has given to us in Christ. This Kingdom is available for all peoples of the world and this peace is our share as long as we remain attentive and positively responsive to the message of Christ, proclaimed by His disciples of every tribe and race and in every season and time.

God’s plan and design has always been for the peace of all of His creatures. Men and women for their part, at different points in the history of our journey with God, have rejected God’s priceless gift of peace, especially through sin and the rejection of God’s plans and purposes. Every sin is a disruption of the peace both of the individual and of the community of God’s sons and daughters.

Backpack Drive

Each summer for more than 15 years, St. Katharine Drexel Parish has been running a back-to-school NEW backpack and NEW school supplies drive in the month of July. The drive benefits children of migrant workers in Pahokee, Florida. The collected backpacks and supplies are sorted, then delivered two weeks before Pahokee public schools reopen to St. Mary’s Church CCD program facility in Pahokee.

The drive allows our church family the opportunity to fill backpacks with school supplies for students in need. Through this, we get to be the hands and feet of Jesus — showing Christ’s love. As followers of Christ, our genuine desire is to be selfless and kind toward others. Jesus calls us to show compassion to those in need. When we are generous with our time, resources, and talents, we make a heartfelt decision of obedience toward Our Father.

We don’t often see the impact that backpacks and school supplies have on children and families in need. It brings parents relief and comfort to know that their children have the school supplies needed to learn and do well in school.

Toy Drive – Angel Tree

SKD toy drives have become an essential part of our parish, bringing parishioners together to make a difference in the lives of those who need them most. Our toy drives play a crucial role in ensuring that the children of the CCD program in Pahokee experience the joy of receiving a gift during the holidays, helping to alleviate the stress faced by migrant parents in that community.

SKD toy drives provide an opportunity for people to express their generosity and kindness. By contributing to the happiness of others, we develop a sense of loving others. — Hebrews 13:1 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” This scripture encourages us to be committed in spirit of serving the Lord. This means that we should be passionate about our beliefs and committed to making a difference in the world.

SKD annual toy drive usually starts on Thanksgiving weekend with decorating the Angel Tree, and runs until the second weekend of December.

THE DRIVES CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS

  • volunteers to help during church collections
  • volunteers to assemble and sort out the backpacks/toys
  • volunteers to deliver the backpacks/toys to Pahokee

SKD drives are excellent opportunities to teach children the values of empathy and compassion. When kids actively participate in donating or volunteering for these events, they learn the importance of giving back. These experiences contribute to the development of socially conscious individuals who understand the impact of their actions on the well-being of others. By sharing our blessings with others today, we are sowing the seeds from our Heavenly Father for a hopeful future for all of us.

For more information on how you can volunteer during either of the drives, please contact (954) 683-3584 - Marie France.

Liturgical Catechesis: The Parts of the Mass | Issue 19 / 40

The preparation of the altar is a key part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the Catholic Mass. It marks the transition from the Liturgy of the Word (readings and homily) to the celebration of the Eucharist (the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood).

After the Prayers of the Faithful, the Offertory or Presentation of the Gifts begins. After the, the altar is prepared.

  • Bread and wine are brought to the altar, usually by members of the congregation. These symbolize both the gifts of creation and the work of human hands. This moment reflects the Church offering itself and all of humanity’s work to God.
  • Members of the congregation offer their Stewardship commitment which is their treasure as their personal offering.
  • During the Offertory procession, the altar is prepared:
    • A corporal (a square white cloth) is unfolded and placed in the center of the altar. It catches any particles of the consecrated host.
    • The chalice (for wine) is placed on the altar.
    • A purificator (a small linen cloth) is placed over or beside the chalice, used to wipe it after Communion.
    • The paten (a plate holding the hosts) is placed on the corporal.
  • If needed, additional ciboria (vessels for distributing the Body of Christ) and chalices (vessels for distributing the Blood of Christ) are placed on the altar.

What is the Purpose of the Procession?

This annual motorcade procession is a significant and now traditional event with three main goals:

  1. To promote Marian devotion under the title of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba and co-patroness of the Archdiocese of Miami.
  2. To encourage participation in events surrounding the Feast of Our Lady of Charity on September 8.
  3. To inspire visits and pilgrimages to the National Shrine in Miami, especially during this Jubilee Year.

How is the Procession Developed?

The procession takes the form of a reverent caravan or motorcade, led by a pickup truck carrying the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Charity, beautifully adorned with flowers. The caravan is escorted by local police and accompanied by a small group of members from the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Charity, who follow behind the statue in prayer and devotion. When the motorcade arrives at the scheduled stop, it parks in the designated location where the prayer encounter will take place. The image does not come down from the pickup truck nor enter any of the parish buildings.

On August 23rd St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Parish is planned as the sixth stop on the route, with an estimated arrival time at 2:30pm and a departure time at 3:00pm.
