This Sunday’s Gospel talks about how to inherit eternal life. In my seven years of being a priest, I have never had anyone come up to ask me the question that the scholar of the law did in this Sunday’s Gospel. In fact, in my entire life as a Catholic, I have never met someone who asks, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Many Christians nowadays would rather talk about political and social issues rather than discussing eternal life and faith matters. That is why we have seen all sorts of political fights and endless bickering over various social issues. Perhaps the first spiritual lesson that this Sunday’s readings want to teach us is to focus on what matters the most for us in the long run. We should not waste our time and resources on worldly things like political and social issues. For, in the end, those issues will not matter at all. Rather, eternal life is what matters the most.

Backpack Drive

Each summer for more than 15 years, St. Katharine Drexel Parish has been running a back-to-school NEW backpack and NEW school supplies drive in the month of July. The drive benefits children of migrant workers in Pahokee, Florida. The collected backpacks and supplies are sorted, then delivered two weeks before Pahokee public schools reopen to St. Mary’s Church CCD program facility in Pahokee.

The drive allows our church family the opportunity to fill backpacks with school supplies for students in need. Through this, we get to be the hands and feet of Jesus — showing Christ’s love. As followers of Christ, our genuine desire is to be selfless and kind toward others. Jesus calls us to show compassion to those in need. When we are generous with our time, resources, and talents, we make a heartfelt decision of obedience toward Our Father.

We don’t often see the impact that backpacks and school supplies have on children and families in need. It brings parents relief and comfort to know that their children have the school supplies needed to learn and do well in school.

Toy Drive – Angel Tree

SKD toy drives have become an essential part of our parish, bringing parishioners together to make a difference in the lives of those who need them most. Our toy drives play a crucial role in ensuring that the children of the CCD program in Pahokee experience the joy of receiving a gift during the holidays, helping to alleviate the stress faced by migrant parents in that community.

SKD toy drives provide an opportunity for people to express their generosity and kindness. By contributing to the happiness of others, we develop a sense of loving others. — Hebrews 13:1 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” This scripture encourages us to be committed in spirit of serving the Lord. This means that we should be passionate about our beliefs and committed to making a difference in the world.

SKD annual toy drive usually starts on Thanksgiving weekend with decorating the Angel Tree, and runs until the second weekend of December.

THE DRIVES CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS

  • volunteers to help during church collections
  • volunteers to assemble and sort out the backpacks/toys
  • volunteers to deliver the backpacks/toys to Pahokee

SKD drives are excellent opportunities to teach children the values of empathy and compassion. When kids actively participate in donating or volunteering for these events, they learn the importance of giving back. These experiences contribute to the development of socially conscious individuals who understand the impact of their actions on the well-being of others. By sharing our blessings with others today, we are sowing the seeds from our Heavenly Father for a hopeful future for all of us.

Liturgical Catechesis: The Parts of the Mass | Issue 20 / 40

The priest takes the bread and says a prayer of blessing (often silently if no music is playing), lifting it slightly. Then, he takes the wine, pours it into the chalice, and adds a few drops of water, symbolizing the union of Christ with His Church. He then says a prayer of blessing over the wine. If the people are singing, the priest may say these prayers quietly.

Washing of Hands (Lavabo)
The priest washes his hands at the side of the altar, praying silently: “Lord, wash away my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
This act symbolizes the desire for interior purification before offering the Eucharistic sacrifice.

Invitation to Prayer
The priest invites the faithful: "Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father."

The people respond: "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands..."

The Altar is now ready at this point, everything is set for the Eucharistic Prayer, during which the bread and wine will become the Body and Blood of Christ.

What is the Purpose of the Procession?

This annual motorcade procession is a significant and now traditional event with three main goals:

  1. To promote Marian devotion under the title of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba and co-patroness of the Archdiocese of Miami.
  2. To encourage participation in events surrounding the Feast of Our Lady of Charity on September 8.
  3. To inspire visits and pilgrimages to the National Shrine in Miami, especially during this Jubilee Year.

How is the Procession Developed?

The procession takes the form of a reverent caravan or motorcade, led by a pickup truck carrying the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Charity, beautifully adorned with flowers. The caravan is escorted by local police and accompanied by a small group of members from the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Charity, who follow behind the statue in prayer and devotion. When the motorcade arrives at the scheduled stop, it parks in the designated location where the prayer encounter will take place. The image does not come down from the pickup truck nor enter any of the parish buildings.

On August 23rd St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Parish is planned as the sixth stop on the route, with an estimated arrival time at 2:30pm and a departure time at 3:00pm.
